The UCMAS program originated in Malaysia in 1993 and has since spread to over 80 countries worldwide.

It is primarily aimed at children aged 4 to 13 years, which is considered an optimal age range for developing cognitive skills.

The program uses the abacus, an ancient calculation tool, as a means to teach mental arithmetic. Children start by learning to use the physical abacus and gradually transition to performing calculations mentally, visualizing the abacus in their minds.

The UCMAS curriculum is structured in levels, with each level progressively increasing in difficulty. It includes practice in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, along with various speed and accuracy exercises.

UCMAS organizes regional, national, and international competitions where students can showcase their mental arithmetic skills.

Instructors undergo rigorous training to ensure they can effectively teach the UCMAS methodology.
