The UCMAS (Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System) Abacus Program is a specialized educational program designed to enhance children’s cognitive skills using mental arithmetic as a medium and Abacus as a tool.

Here are some key points about the program:
Origin

The UCMAS program originated in Malaysia in 1993 and has since spread to over 80 countries worldwide.

Target Age Group

It is primarily aimed at children aged 4 to 13 years, which is considered an optimal age range for developing cognitive skills.

Methodology

The program uses the abacus, an ancient calculation tool, as a means to teach mental arithmetic. Children start by learning to use the physical abacus and gradually transition to performing calculations mentally, visualizing the abacus in their minds.

Benefits
  • Cognitive Development: Enhances concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills
  • Academic Performance: Improves mathematical ability and overall academic performance.
  • Confidence and Self-Esteem: Builds confidence in handling complex calculations and boosts self-esteem through mastery of the skill.
  • Creativity: Stimulates creativity by engaging both hemispheres of the brain.
Curriculum

The UCMAS curriculum is structured in levels, with each level progressively increasing in difficulty. It includes practice in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, along with various speed and accuracy exercises.

Competitions

UCMAS organizes regional, national, and international competitions where students can showcase their mental arithmetic skills.

Instructor Training

Instructors undergo rigorous training to ensure they can effectively teach the UCMAS methodology.
